Understanding Grading Scales

Standard Percentage Scale

The most common US grading scale uses 10-point bands: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = below 60%. Some districts use a stricter scale where A begins at 93% and include plus/minus modifiers.

Standards-Based Grading

Growing in popularity for K-8, standards-based grading uses a 4-point proficiency scale: 4 = Exceeds, 3 = Meets, 2 = Approaching, 1 = Beginning. It focuses on mastery of specific skills rather than accumulation of points.

Weighted Grading

Weighted grading assigns different importance to assignment categories. A common weighting: tests = 40%, classwork = 30%, homework = 20%, participation = 10%. This system better reflects which assessments matter most for measuring learning.

GPA and College Admissions

Colleges look at both unweighted (4.0 scale) and weighted GPAs. Honors courses typically add 0.5 to the GPA value, and AP/IB courses add 1.0. A student with a 3.5 unweighted GPA could have a 4.0+ weighted GPA.
