Grading scales explained
The EZ grader works with any of these. Pick the one your school uses in the calculator, or set your own.
Percentage scale
The usual US scale uses 10 point bands: A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%. Some districts start an A at 93% and add plus and minus grades.
Standards-based grading
Common in K to 8. Students get 4 (exceeds), 3 (meets), 2 (approaching) or 1 (beginning) for each standard, so the grade shows what they can do rather than an average of points.
Weighted categories
Tests, classwork, homework and participation count for different shares of the final grade, for example 40, 30, 20 and 10%. Grade each paper here, then let your gradebook do the weighting.
European scales
Germany grades 1 (best) to 6, France marks out of 20 with 10 to pass, the Netherlands uses 1 to 10 with 5.5 to pass, and Spain and Italy use 0 to 10 with 5 to pass. Pick yours in the calculator.

EZ grader questions
How does an EZ grader work?
Type the number of questions on the test and how many a student got wrong. The EZ grader subtracts the wrong answers, divides by the total and rounds to a whole percent, then looks up the letter grade on your scale. For 20 questions with 3 wrong that's 17 right, 85%, a B. The chart next to the calculator shows every possible score for that test at once.
Can I print an EZ grader chart?
Yes. Press Print chart for a one-page chart of the test you're grading, or Print all common sizes for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 question charts on your scale. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog if you'd rather keep a file. Both are free, with no signup.
Does it work with half points?
Yes. Turn on Half points and you can enter 2.5 wrong, and the chart counts up in half steps. Use it when a question is worth partial credit.
Can I change the grading scale?
Pick US A to F (90, 80, 70, 60), US with plus and minus, Germany's 1 to 6 IHK key, a French mark out of 20, the Dutch 1 to 10 scale, or 0 to 10 as used in Spain and Italy. Or choose Your own scale and set the minimum percent for each grade. The page remembers your choice in this browser.
How do I grade a whole class at once?
Use Grade a whole class below the calculator. Paste one student per line with their number wrong, like Maya 3, or their score, like Maya 17/20. You get each student's percent and grade, the class average, highest and lowest score and how many passed, and you can copy the results into a spreadsheet or print them.
Are my students' names or scores sent anywhere?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser. If you choose to save the names as a class, only the names go to SchoolGPT, never the scores, and names are swapped for placeholders before anything reaches the AI.
What is the standard grading scale in the United States?
The most common scale is A = 90 to 100%, B = 80 to 89%, C = 70 to 79%, D = 60 to 69% and F below 60%. Many districts use plus and minus grades, and some start an A at 93%. Check your school's policy and set your own scale if it differs.
How do I calculate a test percentage by hand?
Subtract the number wrong from the total to get the number right, divide by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 25 questions with 4 wrong is 21 right, and 21 divided by 25 is 0.84, so 84%.
What about tests where questions have different point values?
Enter the total points as the number of questions and the points lost as the number wrong. A 50 point test where a student lost 8 points works out to 84%. Turn on half points if you give half marks.
How do I convert a letter grade to GPA?
On a standard 4.0 scale A is 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7 and F 0.0. Honors classes often add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0. The table further down has the full conversion.
